Performance of a Wet Electrostatic Precipitator in Marine Applications

Emissions of marine traffic can be lowered by switching to less polluting fuels or investing in exhaust aftertreatment. Electrostatic precipitation is a widely used method for particle removal but it not currently combination with engines. This study presents the filtration characteristics an emission reduction system designed applications and consisting scrubber Wet Precipitator (WESP) series. Partial flow from 1.6 MW engine, operated light heavy fuel oil, was led system. Particle concentrations were measured before system, after WESP. determined different engine loads. The alone removed 15–55% non-volatile number, 30–40% mass black carbon depending on load, when HFO used. By studying size distributions, found also generate particles seen as additional mode 20–40 nm range. combining WESP over 98.5% metrics With MDO fuel, 96.5% PN 99% removed.
